Faced with dwindling resources and expanding roles, many enrollment and marketing leaders are relying on data and enrollment strategies built for a student who no longer exists. The students entering the funnel in 2026 are closer to Gen Alpha than the Gen Zers most traditionally think of. As this new generation enters the 2026 funnel, higher ed faces a critical dilemma: What types of content actually build an emotional connection and motivate prospective students to take the next step toward enrollment?
By surveying over 1,000 traditional-aged prospective students, we investigated how today’s prospects utilize content across different stages of their decision-making process. The findings reveal a dramatic shift in student expectations. Modern prospects are not consumers of campus life branding; they are highly pragmatic, risk-averse evaluators. They rely on surprising content types to resolve personal and financial anxieties, assess institutional credibility, and find a clear, friction-free path forward.
To help colleges and universities adapt, this study moves beyond channel preferences to map content type, format, and delivery channel directly to the student’s emotional and psychological state. In doing so, we identify not only what helps students make a decision, but what inspires them to choose your institution.
