As one of the nation’s oldest public historically Black universities and the second-oldest public higher ed institution in North Carolina, Fayetteville State University had a compelling story to tell, but not one that fits the assumptions many prospective students make about higher education. While FSU is known for its rich heritage, nationally recognized academic programs, military-friendly culture, and exceptional affordability through NC Promise, its student body is anything but traditional. Nearly half of its students are adult learners, more than one-third are military affiliated, and many are first-generation college students balancing careers, families, and other responsibilities alongside their education.

The university wanted a brand campaign that reflected this reality. FSU partnered with VisionPoint Marketing to craft a brand campaign that reflected this reality by celebrating who its students are, honoring the institution’s mission, and differentiating the university in an increasingly competitive enrollment landscape.
Our Approach
VisionPoint’s engagement was designed to deliver both immediate performance and long-term brand impact. To generate results quickly, the partnership began with a Quick-to-Market campaign that allowed Fayetteville State University to begin reaching prospective students while VisionPoint conducted a comprehensive discovery and strategy process.
Through stakeholder interviews, current-state analysis, audience research, and strategic planning, the team uncovered what truly made FSU distinctive: It’s an institution that doesn’t simply provide affordable education but a broadened worldview that unlocks each student’s inherent potential. That insight became the foundation of the university’s new creative platform: Make Way.
More than a tagline, Make Way became a rallying cry that embodied Fayetteville State University’s mission of opening doors and removing barriers for every type of learner. The campaign celebrated adult learners returning to school, military veterans transitioning to civilian careers, first-generation students forging new paths, and traditional undergraduates pursuing ambitious futures. Rather than asking students to fit a predefined mold, the campaign positioned FSU as a university that makes room for every story and every ambition.

The creative brought that promise to life through bold typography, striking imagery of students confidently moving forward, and messaging that reinforced the idea of progress, possibility, and purpose. Headlines such as Make Way for Greater Opportunities, Make Way for Employment After Deployment, and Make Way for Your Boldest Ambitions connected directly to the diverse audiences Fayetteville State serves while remaining unified under a single, memorable brand platform.
To maximize reach, VisionPoint launched the creative campaign with a coordinated omnichannel media strategy spanning billboards, airport advertising, bus wraps, social media ads, YouTube, programmatic display, and more, ensuring prospective students encountered a consistent, compelling message no matter the channel or journey stage.
The Results
While the initial Quick-to-Market campaign established a strong performance baseline, the launch of the Make Way campaign delivered significant gains across all metrics. Compared to the earlier reporting period, ad impressions and clicks increased by 70% (from 12 million to 20 million impressions and 43,000 to 73,000 clicks), reflecting substantially greater reach and engagement. Most importantly, conversions more than doubled, rising from 1,703 to 3,534, and the conversion rate improved from 3.96% to 5.79%, demonstrating higher-quality engagement throughout the funnel on just a 38% increase in budget spend.

The Quick-to-Market campaign proved that optimized media could deliver strong short-term performance, but the Make Way campaign demonstrated what becomes possible when audience insights, institutional mission, breakthrough creative, and omnichannel execution work together. By grounding the campaign in Fayetteville State University’s identity instead of simply promoting programs or affordability, VisionPoint helped the university build stronger engagement, drive substantially more conversions, and tell a story that authentically reflected the students it serves.
