Summer is here and so are our new interns. At VisionPoint Marketing, interns are an integral part of our team and we make sure they know it. We pride ourselves in our ability to fetch our own coffee, answer our own calls and massage our own feet, so our interns are able to spend their time gaining useful experience and contributing to projects.

To demonstrate this, we asked real-life VisionPoint interns to talk about the time they’ve spent with us so far. And no, they weren’t threatened in any way to say flattering things... just heavily encouraged.

Here’s what they had to say:

What are you hoping to get out of your internship?

Allison - graphic design intern and rising senior at NC State majoring in graphic design:
I am hoping to come out of this internship with not only a more solidified idea of my future career path, but also a better understanding of how graphic design functions within a company.

Brock - social media intern and rising senior at NC State majoring in communication:
I am hoping to contribute as much as I can to VisionPoint’s social media efforts and gain real world experience with a great team that will prepare me for the future.

David - project manager intern and rising senior at UNC Chapel Hill majoring in advertising:
I’m hoping to learn about the process of completing a variety of projects, as well as learning how to establish and maintain relationships with the clients.

Sam - web development intern and rising senior at Appalachian State majoring in computer information systems:
I am hoping to learn as much as I can about HTML and CSS, as well as any other tool that is useful in web development.

What do you like most about your internship?

Brock: This is my first internship so I was a little bit worried about being intimidated once I got into the work environment. Those worries were long gone by the end of my first day. Everyone at VisionPoint made me feel welcome and like I was part of the team.

David: My favorite thing about my internship is that I can get as involved in a project as I want. They let me sit in on meetings so I can learn as much as possible and I don’t feel intimidated to voice my opinion in brainstorming sessions.

Do you feel like you’re gaining knowledge in your field?

Allison: Learning about the current graphic design projects at VisionPoint Marketing has definitely given me a better grasp of what I will be experiencing as a professional. My time management has improved and I’m starting to understand the general workflow throughout the day.

Brock: Definitely. I have been able to take a first hand look at the power of social media and what it can accomplish for an organization.

What’s the most helpful skill you’ve learned so far?

David: How to plan my time effectively. I’ve been working on so many accounts doing a variety of assignments, and learning how to balance those responsibilities has been invaluable. I’ve even carried that skill over beyond work, so now my Google Calendar holds my entire life.

Sam: The most helpful skill that I have been learning/developing is my CSS skills. I had been taught very briefly CSS in the past, but now I feel that I have gotten a much better understanding of the language.

How are you liking the work environment?

Allison: The work environment is great in that it is relaxed but still holds a high expectation for good work. Dwight, VisionPoint’s graphic designer, and I are able to have successful brainstorming sessions because he has made me feel comfortable and relaxed, but has also treated me as a co-worker expected to do strong work.

Sam: I love the work environment here. Everyone is always wanting to get to know you, and is always willing to help you in any way that they can. I even get emails from Chris showing me some of the cool things he has learned while here at VisionPoint that he wants to teach me while I’m here.

Any advice for future VisionPoint interns?

Allison: Ask questions, stay involved and never be afraid to approach anyone. Take full advantage of the opportunity that has been given to you and enjoy it!

David: Be a Yes Man. This will give you new opportunities to do so many different things and build a more complete understanding. Although I’m a project manager intern, I told Carissa - my manager - that I enjoy writing, so she’s been letting me help with a bunch of writing assignments, and she put me in charge of a social media account. Also, the environment is relaxed, so you don’t need to beef up your wardrobe too much. I bought a new suit for the internship, and I don’t think it’s going to leave the closet this summer.

What are your hobbies and interests?
My current hobbies include swimming, cycling, running, hiking, book making, silk screening, fashion design and sewing. I also love to cook and experiment with new recipes. I would have to say my favorite thing in the world is enjoying time in the presence of incredible food, amazing people and beautiful design.

Have you done anything in the past that you are especially proud of?
This past semester, I helped design, typeset and layout articles in Vertices, Duke University’s Journal of Science and Technology, with a team of other NCSU student designers. It was wonderful to work alongside a fellow university and combine the knowledge of Duke’s science and technology students with the design skills of NCSU’s graphic design students. In the end, we had a beautifully finished product of which we were all proud.
